Heart disease remains the #1 global cause of death with 17.3 million deaths each year, according to the American Heart Association (AHA). That number is expected to rise to more than 23.6 million by 2030.

According to the AHA, more than 350,000 people suffer an out-of-hospital sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) in the U.S. every year and 95% of the victims die before reaching the hospital. That is approximately equivalent to the combined annual deaths from:

•           Firearms

•           Car accidents

•           Breast, cervical, colorectal and prostate cancers

•           Home fires

•           Diabetes

•           Alzheimer’s disease

•           HIV

•           Suicides

SCA kills 1,000 people per day or 1 person every 2 minutes (Sudden Cardiac Arrest Association). Brain death starts to occur 4 to 6 minutes after someone experiences SCA if no cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and defibrillation (AED) occurs during that time.

However...

According to a 2018 Cleveland Clinic survey, half of Americans say they know how to perform CPR. However, only 10% know how to perform it correctly. The same study claims that only 27% of Americans say there is an AED at their workplace.
